Stratum:   possible fill or the bottom of RT 278; yellowish brown soft and sandy silt with 30% tile and cobbles
Notes:   This basket is the area formerly identified as RT 278, beneath the N part we uncovered some of the lower courses of wall 278. This stratum lies over both the soil of B39 and also the level unto which the pit excavated with B38 was cut. Soil contains many different types of tiles broken into fist-sized and smaller pieces. This layer covered the NW part of B39 and after the removal of B40 the entire area continued to be excavated as B39. The main difference between the soil of B39 and that of B40 is that there is no wall plaster in B40 and it is lighter in color.
N.B. The topsoil was not cleaned before excavation began and therefore this basket may be contaminated.
