Stratum:   Cistern 2006-01 fill. Light, reddish brown, fine grained soft with 30-40% inclusions with medium coarse pebbles. Poorly sorted. Silty sand.
Notes:   This basket is a continuation of basket 87, continuing down through the western fill of cistern 2006-01. A bronze coin was found at E 410.64, N 974.76, elevation 90.07. The new basket was begun after an arbitrary stop, however when we re-started we found the soil to have more inclusions: medium course pebbles. While the soil description has changed, while removing the soil we have not noticed a huge stratigraphic change. The charcoal bits continue to be found as do the tile fragments. We have noticed grater inclusion of mudbrick which may account for changes in the soil. A terracotta femaile head was discovered at E 410.40, N 975.76, elevation 90.05. After the workmen finished one pass, we decided to change baskets. As noted above, the top of the basket was filled with pebbles, however as the pass was completed we came upon a fair number of cobble to boulder size inclusions. This new layer also appears in the artificial scarp created by excavation in the eastern half of the cistern in 2006. Based upon our digging and the scarp, it seems that we have reached a different type of fill with more and larger inclusions. Although already noted, we would stress that frequent chunks of reddish mudbrick appeared throughout the entire basket. There was much more mudbrick in this basket than any of the previous baskets in the western half of the cistern fill. All soil was dry sieved except for a bag of soil collect for water sieving. Small finds from basket 88 included bone, shell, bronze wasters or iron slag (?), and wall plaster. Photographs were taken following this basket (Photo numbers BW-2007-11-05, JPG-2007-0167, BW-2007-11-06, JPG-2007-0168).
