Stratum:   Pocket of fill probably associated with NB977 B98. Soil is medium reddish brown sandy clay with 40% pebbles and 30% cobbles, loose.
Notes:   This starts as a very small patch of redder soil probably left over from the fill excavated in NB977 B98. However, it has been distinguished as having less clay and being more compact than the patch directly to the west of it. The layer runs further east than we intially anticipated. The soil at the bottom, too, is much softer, not unlike the soil in the adjacent patch dug as B3. After removing this area, a large section of fill from W289 to the west to where the construction of the castellum for the pool interrupts W265 seems homogenous, but runs under a layer of very pebbly soil at the east, and we excavate that next. See top plan pg. 14.
