Stratum:   Ash fill over and around hearth. Light grey. Fine grained very soft with 15% inclusions. Fine to coarse pebbles. Silt.
Notes:   Basket 16 is the removal of the hump containing the ashy soil directly above a more yellowish and red fill to the north of the hearth interior. The basket was located to an area north and just northeast of where we thought the hearth boundary would be. This ashy layer was different in color and consistency (with more inclusions) than a more white layer (probably clay) within the hearth proper. Since this ashy area extends to the east without any good definition of an eastern hearth boundary with stones, it seems that the hearth did not extend that far east. It is more likely that the ashy material was spread out around the hearth and especially to the east. Last year's excavation of the area in NB982 came across an ashy layer that extended farrther to the south of the hearth proper. It seems that the area of hearth activity is rather messy and is not confined to a small area bounded by stones. After removing the thin layer of ash soil, a more reddish soil was exposed. After the ash layer was removed, we realized that the cluster of small rocks that initially appeared to form the eastern boundary of the hearth was in a different soil matrix than the rest of the hearth. We believed that the soil and rock cluster was cut into the edge of the hearth and thus we removed this area in Basket 17. Photographs were taken of the area following the end of basket 16.
