Stratum:   Fill in pit under hearth. Light greyish brown. Fine grained soft. Coarse pebbles to boulder inclusions. 30% inclusions. Clayey sand.
Notes:   Basket 30 was originally begun as the area containing a hard clay layer, which was first exposed at the bottom of basket 26. However, as we defined the area of the basket, we realized that the stratum was entirely mixed with clay chunks, pockets of ashy soil and numerous large inclusions. After an initial pass, the basket was bounded wall 297 on the norht and wal 298 on the south and had a pit-like shape. It was impossible to distinguish an exact soil difference as clayish, ashy and reddish soil all appeared to be mixed. The soil itself was very soft and loose and we realized that this was the fill of a pit. Several more passes were taken in this basket as there continued to be similar fill of boulders, pottery, roof tiles, clay and ashy soil. In total 35+ boulder sized rocks and 10+ roof tiles turned up in this fill. Other finds include a terra cotta horse head, shell, olive pits, bone and a stamped amphora handle. Furthermore, a bronze coin was found at E410.76, N976.72, el. 90.57. The entire depth of the basket is well below the top elevation of the north cistern wall (wall 298). In fact, the pit continues underneath the first course of the exterior north cistern wall. There was some discussion about the possibility of the cistern wall cutting into this pit. However, it also seems possible that this pit is somehow associated with the hearth that was found above it. We wonder if it is possible that the pit represents an earlier phase of hearth activity (i.e. a hearth incorporating a pit) before the construction of the more well defined hearth. It seems noteworthy that we have found similar material (ash, clay, and large rock inclusions) throughout this basket as was found within and directly below the built hearth. The exact relationship of this pit with the cistern and higher hearth needs further consideration.
