Title:   Soft fill north of cistern with possible cut
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   216
Date:   2016/07/19
Stratum:   Inclusions: tile, pottery, bone, charcoal, plant roots, angular platy limestone cobbles, small spherical rounded pebbles (40% inclusions)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark brownish grey. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   It was decided to remove 216 to further elucidate the relationship between the red fill to the north and the ashy grey soil known as the so-called pit fill. This context has the same soil as 207 and part of our goal was to bring down the soil to an elevation equal with 207. Removal revealed the southern edge of more reddish fill. This context has become of particular interest because of its relationship to the nearby cistern. The cistern has been dated to the late Roman period by architecture. The pottery coming from this context has both Byzantine and late Roman sherds. Clearance of the context revealed another course of a yet unlabeled wall. It appears that this "pit fill" is later than the cistern wall. The fill seems to cut where part of the wall ran before it was robbed out. The fill post dates the cistern wall of 199 198. We initially wanted to understand a possible cut at the context's northern end. It's still unclear if this is a natural depositional cut or one for a structure
Half way through the context it was decided to do 100% sieving.

*Worth taking a picture of since this variety is not in RPC. Obverse legend may include [PP] and crown is definitely radiate while RPC 2.183-185 are all laureate.
