Context:   89
Date:   2016/06/09
Stratum:   Mixed soil, red and black. 10-15% small tile fragments (up to ~15 cm in diameter but mostly smaller); less than 5% small rounded spherical/tabular pebbles; very little bone; 10% compacted clay inclusions
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish black. The soil compaction is hard. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   We opened Context 89 as it appeared as a distinct layer of harder and more clayey soil, perhaps bounded by a potential wall (what would become 126). This context contained a relatively high density scatter of tile fragments, some measuring up to 0.15m in diameter, but very little bone and only perhaps ~5% pottery sherds. There were a lot of concentrated white clay inclusions throughout. At first, we though that the high clay content deposit in the SE corner (delineated while excavating Context 79) formed part of the same deposit, but Andreas noted that this area consisted of even harder and more clayey soil than that of 89, so we maintained this pre-established boundary. Toward the south the soil became browner and softer, so we closed Context 89. Two pieces of glass and a bronze strip were found, as well as a nice lamp fragment collected amongst the pottery.
21/6/16 TB and EJ: Glass stem from this context seems to resemble in size and color stems from contexts 79, 140, 128, and 106, but the stem is too ill-preserved to determine similarity with certainty.
