Lot:   NB1100 B148
Stratum:   Inclusions; 15% pebbles, 5% large stones. Small (less than 2%) specks of charcoal. Fewer roots than previous basket
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. Bottom slope of the context is level down to the The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This basket (148) sits directly below 147 in the south half of the pit. We started a new layer because the soil had many bits of charcoal and the soil appears more silty and lighter than the previous basket. There are larger rocks and less roots. To the north of this basket sits the reddish chunk of soil. It seems that this layer continues down without cutting into this.
We have found two pieces of worked marble in this basket.
We are seeing more stone inclusions in this layer. It is filled with rocks of various sizes.
We have come down on a harder patch in the southern most point of the pit that looks like the reddish patch to the north but Bill asserts that the soil is not the same in the two.
The soil in the center of the pit is softer and whiter than that above. We think that the hard patch to the north sits on top of this. There are tiles sticking out of the north edge of this basket and so we will dig to the north and take the hard, red patch off next.
It has started to rain.
The northern red soil seems to slide down gradually and this basket sits on top of it.
Now we have decided to begin the next basket in the south because it appears as if the northern patch slides under the southern patch.
Small finds from sieve; coin, iron, gold tessera, spindle hooks, glass, bronze.
