Stratum:   Sandy silt with 10%-20% inclusions: ceramic sherds, tile fragments, and a very poorly sorted mix of stones ranging from fine pebbles to cobbles and from rounded to angular. Grass and weeds growing on surface. Five orange trees grow out of topsoil surfac
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the NW. Bottom slope of the context is uneven down to the NWThe soil color is very dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Top elevation (cont.): Slightly sloping to NW; steeper sloping to the N north of modern chain-link fence. There is a vertical drop ca. 1.5m north of the modern chain-link fence where the excavations of the 1960s left a scarp.
Bottom elevation (cont.): Slight. Steeper N of of modern fence still.
EXCAVATION NOTES:
Preliminary removal of topsoil in the western 1/2 of the area started before excavation season began. The W 1/2 was already clean of topsoil when we arrived. In the NW 1/4 of the trench, a feature has been revealed lying directly under topsoil. This feature is a more compact soil filled with cobbles and larger stones and at present appears to run E-W, a linear feature [excavated later as B4]. It is possible that this is the top of a wall that appears to run into the scarp on the N edge of our excavation area, a wall revealed by H. Robinson in the 1960's [ammendment: this feature is not a wall, but a pile of cobbles, see B4].
[Actually, the E-W wall appears to have been exposed by Amyx/Morgan in their 1936 exploratory trench just to the N. of Nezi field in Giambourani field (NB 153, 154). They do not mention the wall specifically, but they were digging in the area in which it is exposed].
Five orange trees have been cut down in our excavation area--their stumps are marked on the plan of the basket [four actually within the area of B1 and the fifth in the S. extension where topsoil was removed with B20].
We changed baskets after removing the top soil (defined by the presence of grasses/weeds and their roots). However, the exposed soil below does not seem to be different in any way besides the absence of grass and roots.
