Description:   The soil color is very dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   251 was opened to remve the 'step' in the pit wall that had been left by the previous excavators. It seems that fill 251 is part of the the orginal pit fill, though excavation had stopped at the 'step' due to a change in texture. We now believe the two are simply different lenses of the same pit fill. The texture, condition and inclusions of fill 251 are similar enough to the description of 247 on its deposit sheet, and similar enough to tha tof 249 (continuation of 247) that we feel this material should all be considered pit fill of pit cut 248.
251 was closed upon reaching a soft ashy layer with flecks of charcoal.
The northeast portion of 251 was dug approx. 20cm deeper than the rest of the context. The excavator was chasing what he thought was the cutting of the pit. When we realized that the soil had changed, we stopped. Actual bottom elevation is 85.99 and the level where we should have stopped (i.e. the bottom-elevation for the rest of 251 that wasn't overdug) is 86.28. The context revealed in the northeast portion of 251 is a reddish brown soil, and possibly a robbing trench for an E-W wall.
We will no longer be excavating the pit fills of cut 248 for the time being. Excavation of this area will continue when the fills to the south, east and west have been brought down to a level where the relations between contexts are more clear.
