Type:   Basket
Name:   Nezi Field, context 2
Area:   Nezi Field
Title:   plow zone, later phase
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1100
Context:   2

Date:   2007/04/11
Stratum:   sandy silt with 20% poorly sorted inclusions: sherds, tile frags, small, medium and coarse pebbles, cobbles, small boulders and animal bone.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. Bottom slope of the context is slight down to the EThe soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This deposit is a churned mix of materials and is located south of the modern chain-link fence which is founded on an earlier E-W wall that seems to be an earlier boundary wall for this field. There is no equivalent deposit north of the fence.
A dense tumble of cobbles in more compact soil lies immediately S of the E-W wall. This stone pile S of the wall may be a result of plowing in this field (currently an orange orchard).
Metal fence posts set in concrete left in situ for the moment.
2 phases of modern chain link fence exist running on the same line and orientation (E-W) through the N 1/2 of our excavation area. The later phase exists as oblong pebbly concrete foundations with the currently standing fence posts set in. The earlier phase exists as smaller round concrete foundations with rusted iron fence posts set in - most posts having been cut off at the foundation some time past.
Some of these fence post foundations lie right on top of the E-W wall - some may have disturbed parts of this wall in their construction.
B2 plowzone comes down on a more compact silty soil in the NW corner of the excavation area. This compact soil is also different from B2 as it has <5% inclusions and the inclusions consist almost primarily of of small pebbles. Several degraded plastic bags were removed at the interface between B2 and this new context. This new context abutts the E-W wall on its S face and appears to be undisturbed.
The linear pile of cobbles partially revealed with B1 has been fully revealed by the removal of B2-plowzone immediately S of the E-W wall in the N 1/2 of the excavation area. This stone pile follows the line of the now dismantled modern fence and is likely the result of agricultural activity, that is, these cobbles were collected in the field and then piled against the field boundary. The cobbles will be removed as a distinct context before the more compact and lighter colored soil below is excavated.
While some of the workmen continue to remove B2 plowzone in the S 1/2 of the excavation area, others concentrated on and found the continuation of the more compact silty soil under B2 plowzone in the NW corner of the excavation area. We hope the more compact silty soil under B2 plowzone represents undisturbed fill. This more compact silty soil continues to contain fewer inclusions than B2 plowzone and these inclusions are primarily small pebbles. B2 plowzone's inclusions continue to be cobbles, a few small fragments of marble, pottery sherds, degraded modern plastic bags, iron nails, and iron wire as well as random other pieces of iron such as amorphous lumps, "hooks", and flat pieces. Two long pieces of black plastic pipe are removed with B2.
As B2 is fully removed, the plow furrows cut into the more compact yellower soil below are defined -- they run roughly E-W and will be recorded as Basket 22.
As B2 is removed from around the stumps of the orange trees growing in the excavation area, the cuts for their planting are defined. The tree pits will be recorded as distinct contexts:
Tree pit fill: Basket #s: 6, 7, 8, 11, 21.
Tree pit cut: Basket #s 9, 10, 12, 15, 25.
In the S 1/2 of the excavation area, B2 comes down on a deposit of orange clay that may be bounded to the N by a stone built wall (runs roughly E-W). This deposit is cut with furrows running both E-W and N-S and are likely plow furrows but more of this deposit must be revealed to know for sure.
At ca. 1002.5 N and 239.85 E at an elevation of 89.98 m, a small flat, rectangular bronze object with a small round hole pierced through both ends was uncovered while B2 was being scraped off the orangish deposit. This object may have come from the top of this new context rather than B2.
