Notes:   Cleomenes began to remove B40 on 24/04/07. In the extreme SW corner he uncovered 4 large tile fragments laying flat.
In the extreme SW corner of B40 Cleomenes uncovered 4 large tile fragments lying flat . More tile frgaments were found lying flat near the center of B40. These tiles represent a new layer so B40 will be closed on 25/4/07 at 8am.
Our original hypothesis concerning B40's formation was that it was a pit, however, due to the appearance of a new layer that included tiles lying flat and the fact that this deposit is not very deep, we now believe that B40 is a lense of debris that lies on top of a possible destruction layer.
On the bottom of B40 in the area directly west of the western scatter of tiles are 2 parallel cuts that have been defined. These are on the same orientation as the faces of the wall that protrudes out from the northern scarp of our excavation area into the area previously excavated in 1961. Therefore we interpret these cuts to the the cuts of a robbing trench that may have totally or partially robbed the stones from this wall in our excavation area.
