Context:   5009

Date:   2007/05/03
Stratum:   60% inclusions: stones and broken roof tiles. No one type of inclusions stands out as the majority.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. Bottom slope of the context is slight down to the NThe soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are continuing to remove the fill from the N-S drain in Room E. The fill is packed with 60% inclusions of broken roof tiles and stones. My analysis is that the two fills (this one and B 5008) were dumped here contemporaneously, because of similar soil: the only significant difference is in the percentage of inclusions and because this soil is very slightly darker than the soil in B 5008.
We suspect that all this fill (B5008-5009) was dumped here after the drain went out of use in order to make the floor level across the room.
Continuing to pull out large broken rooftiles.
Does the drain connect in some way to the sewer that runs under the sidewalk of the road just E of Room E? It would have to turn a right angle somewhere under the room just S of room E. Or does it lead to the well directly S of Room E?
This layer comes down onto a white-greenish soil below, which will be excavated in a different basket (B5010).
The S wall of room E cuts the drain (does not bond).
