| Description: | Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt. | |
| Notes: | Our first excavations in this area were meant to answer the questions of the use of this area, whether it was interior or exterior, how it related to the walls visible to the west and south. There had been a previous excavation which had possibly left this area while leveling the rest, to the N, E, and W. Following the " last in first out" technique we saw that there was what looked like a circular cut which went through the top layer of whitish earth 5172. We dug it trying to determine the use of the pit, whether it was a robbing pit, a storage pit, or a well. In this very mixed context there was modern pottery found under ancient pieces, possibly inserted since the time of the 1st excavation in the 60s. The inclusions got dramatically denser towards the bottom of this context in a significant enough manner so as to change contexts to 5167. | |
