Description:   The context shape in plan is irregular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is vertical sides and flat base. Truncation: Original Shape-no truncation.
Notes:   The cut's sides are vertical at almost all points. They lead into a base that is generally flat but has bumps made by stones wedged in the soil. The cut is almost entirely rectangular, but it is a bit more rounded on its east end, yet gradually. This explains the short width of 20cm. This context seems to cut into what may be the foundation trench of the wall on our east side (W39=Wall 5218).
The nature of this cut was made apparent by excavating context 5171, which had filled it. The massive amoung of poorly sorted inclusions, as well as the fact that the tiles did not yield joins, indicates tht this is the cut of a pit filled with random, discarded material. The soil of the deposit was very distinct from that surrounding it, which made the cut very obvious.
Since this is a pit, it is hard to discern how it relates meaningfully with the rest of our area. Yet, since it seems to cut into what may be the foundation trench of the wall to the east (Wall 5218), its deposit may help with the dating (terminus ante quem) of that wall foundation.
Significant: Our current excavation of context 5177, a deposit on the west end of our area, indicates that the deposit of this cut extends further west than previously anticipated, along the south wall (5215) of our area. The elevation still suggests a pit, not a foundation trench, but we are going to excavate this deposit and cut further.
It seems as if this pit cutting may have cut into part of a foundatin trench along the north face of the all at the south of our area (that is, Wall 5215).
