The diggers felt a difference in the inclusions and the hard composition of 5201 compared to the softer layers it overlaid (5214, 5209, and 5251) which we suggest are leveling fill for floor 5201. One possible reason why the various layers of clay floors are so confusing and not a continous smooth floor which run length of N/S of the excavated area may be due a robbing trench (5267) dug into the E-W wall which disappears into the east baulk. There may have been a floor collapse or sinking in this area (over 5267) which required multiple repairs in order to level the subsequent floors.
