Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Under subfloor 5186 we found a semi-circular hardened area (5239) made of clay and stones [cut 5204= structure 5239 and is filled by 5203]. We dug this fill to determine the extent and use of this structure, hoping to figure out 1) whether it was a fire-pit or storage area 2) to what extent the walls were formed on purpose and 3) and to what extent they used the line of stones which ran N-S along the eastern limit of the context (stones removed in 5261). The fill was very soft and loose, and as it was being excavated, it looked more like dumped debris than any sort of burning area, though we found a few pieces of charcoal and an ashy lens(5207) resting on 5204. The lack of buring on the animal bones from fill 5203 and the fact that the clay walls around the pit were not baked, suggests it was not exposed to fire or the high temperatures indicative of a hearth or oven context. The scarp made by previous excavations appears to have removed the northern half of 5204/5239 suggesting its original shape may have been an oval rather than a semi-circle.
The N-S wall uncovered by 5203 turned out to be one course of stones without any strong relation to the semi-circular pit 5204/5239
