Description:   The context shape in plan is irregular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is vertical sides and flat base. Truncation: Originally believed to be cut by 5218 Revised Interpetation: Original cut, not truncated..
Notes:   The cut is truncated by wall 5218, and its elevtation increases as one moves west. We believe that this trench may therefore reflect a wall repair, but this is merely a hypothesis The trench is narrowest where walls 5216 and 5218 nearly met. But as one moves west, the width increases in a uniform fashion, with the widest point emerging at its west end. We were able to recognize the cut by its softer and blacker soil, which contrasted with the surrounding soil. This soil ran alng wall 5218, but it did not overlie it. This trench cuts into the area to the south generally, which we are still excavating and have not concretely identified. The materials form this cut will help us date at least one of the building/repair phases of wall 5216. It could also be used for the relative dating of wall 5218, which cuts into it, as well as the rest of the area to the south, generall.
Original Dimensions:
Revised Interpretation: This cut reached its correct dimensions after extracting contexts 5273, 5326, and 5330. The second plan attached reflects the removal of these contexts, the first reflects how the cut appeared when 5269 was first taken out as a context number. The trench was filled with deposits of distinct soils, but all these soils were different from the softer soil to the south, which 5269 cut through. However, such soil relationships were only revealed as we excavated contexts 5273, 5326, and 5330. This is the reason why the excavation of the foundation trench was only completed after initially removing 5260 from it. It had originally appeared that the foundation trench ended when we had reached new soil types--it later turned out that the trench was simply been filled with deposits of different soil types.
More Revised Interpretations: We have reconsidrd the cut 5269 after realizing that the foundation trench is larger than we initially thought. Our first measurements were as follows: 1023.23N 1022.97S 262.22W 264.25E, 85.16 top, 84.88 bottom. The new measurements are 1023.28N, 1022.78S, 266.20E, 263.20W, 85.16 top, 64.53 bottom.
Also we no longer think that Wall 5128 truncates this foundation trench but that the founation trench went around Wall 5218, which was from an earlier time. The foundation trench also appears to continue to the East but would not continue due to logistical reasons.
There is a possibility that the foundation trench (5269) for Wall 5216 actually cut 5248, and the contexts of 5211 and 5256 may be associated as fill of 5269. However, this cannot be certain especially because 5256 overlaid Wall 5216.
Also of note is that the foundation trench for the south face of this wall (5216) to the east was excavated in 1961. It is in NB. 229, pp. 185-186, 190, pottery lot 684.
