Stratum: | 20% inclusions: roof tiles, some pottery, live roots in soil, mixed size and shape of cobbles including a few boulders
Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark pinkish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | The reason for digging this context is to see if we could determine what is the nature of the pedestraled deposits under the 3 stone wall (5353). As discussed in the 5355, two possible hypotheses were forwarded by James Herbst and Alicia Carter. At the bottom of 5357 in the center of the context, there appears to be more stone/tiles in softer soil, surrounded by harder soil--possibly a pit. In the southern end of the context, we came down upon a hard surface. This pit is approximately .80m in length and will be removed in a separate context (5359). Although this deposit did contain many large cobbles and small boulders capable of serving as a foundation for wall 5353 (wall 64), the fact the intervening deposit between this one and the wall (5355) had more soil and smaller stone inclusions does not make this likely. It is more likely that these deposits are simply part of the wall's pedestal left by the 1960's excavations. Roof tiles: 40n=11kg.
