Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   There is a flat platform on top of most of this context (from 1021N to Northern most point), then it slopes down south towards wall. I believe this context is below what was a pit excavated in a previous season. It became a small island of soil which we needed to remove before we could take down a layer which covers the little dividing wall and is cut by the two foundation trenches for the south and west walls. We stopped when the "island" was removed and we met the harder soil beneath. Visible is a sizable piece a diagnostic pottery (possiby foot or neck) in the layer below.
Notes added 7/5/08 by ACF: Alicia infomed us that a pit in the SW corner of the room cut this deposit, thereby creating this "island" in the corner between the walls and the excavated pit. She suggests that we compare this soil to previously excavated soil on the other side of the pit to see if it is the same desposit.
Once 5384 was excavated, it revealed a layer of very hard soil which was different from the soil the north of our context (5388). We will excavate this layer to the north first, since it overlies this very hard soil to the south.
