Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   5390 is the first deposit to be excavated under structure 5376. When the soil under 5376 was revealed, three distinct deposits and a large, flat boulder of Jurassic limestone (identification by Guy Sanders) were visible: 1) a small reddish loaf shaped deposit (5390), 2) an ash deposit to the south of 5390 (5398), and a greyish deposit that abutted the first two as well as the limestone boulder (5391).
Once revealed, it was clear that deposit under 5376 was not a foundation but rather soil surface in which the stones of 5376 sat. The goal of 5376's removal was to establish the construction details of the earlier N-S wall (5394) and try and locate its foundation (5395) (later determined to be an earlier wall). In the 1960s, most of the soil was removed from around 5376 (as well as 5375) and between 5376 and the extension of Wall 38 west of 5376. We are attempting to identify if there are corresponding deposits between the martyrs left by the 1960s excavation: the deposits under 5376, the deposits under 5375, and the surface 5376 and its underlying deposits.
