Title:   Foundation trench fill for wall 5403 fourth stratu
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5419
Page:   0
Date:   2008/05/09
Stratum:   Total inclusions 25%: 5% fine-coarse pebbles, spherical to tabular and rounded to angular in shape, 10% pottery, 10% tile, <5% boulders.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We began clearing out the foundation trench on the south side of wall 5403 in order to learn more about this wall and its date. Panos began at the west end and moved eastward. The director suggested and excavation in the east end of 5414 and 5417 have supported that rather than 2 phases of the wall, the two foundation trenches may in fact be two steps of the same construction. We are leaving a martyr at the west end of the trench where it meets the foundation trench 5106. Another martyr will be left at the east end between 5419 and the excavation cut from 1961. There appears to me to be quite a bit more tile in this trench than the one above it which was 5397. More of the cut in the red soil along the south side of the trench which distinguished 5397 from 5419 was revealed - it appears to only exist between the two interior N-S walls to the south of the trench. As the western half of the trench began to be excavated, it revealed a sloping cut of the trench in the hard reddish soil in the western part of the room. Panos began a second pass from west to east pulling out a few boulders from the west end. In this pass there was very little tile but more pottery (first pass yielded very little pottery). In the east end Panos came down on a hard, reddish layer. Therefore, we are closing out this context. We will open a new context for the rest of the trench in the west.
Notes added later: (12/5/08 CWP) It was decided that we would not continue digging out this foundation trench fill as Panos cannot reach much further down with the small pick and the space is too narrow for anyone to fit into. We are going to remove the west martyr and cover the remaining fill with nylon.
