Corinth Basket: Nezi Field, context 5436 Collection: | | Corinth | Type: | | Basket | Name: | | Nezi Field, context 5436 | Area: | | Nezi Field | Context Type: | | Foundation trench | Title: | | Foundation trench cut for wall 5403 | Category: | | Cut | Notebook: | | 1101 | Context: | | 5436 | Page: | | 0 | Date: | | 2008/05/12 | Description: | | The context shape in plan is linear. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. Truncation: cut by 5106 and wall 5435. | Notes: | | We began clearing out this foundation trench last week and divided the fill for various reasons into four different contexts. Also, included in the fill of the trench is the wall 5403. Unfortunately, due to the narrowness of the trench we were unable to excavate much further than about 0.30m down. We are taking out the western martyr as it is no longer needed to prevent contamination, and covering the remaining fill with nylon. We therefore don't have a sense of the base of the cut below the remaining fill. The east martyr will be left to prevent the remaining fill from erroding into the large pit left from the 1960s excavations. When the martyr in the west was removed (5433) the bottom of the foundation trench (hard, red soil) in the west corner was found, but it only extended 0.45m from the west wall. The foundation cut then continues down further from this point (which we are not excavating) and ends after the eastern orthostate of the wall 5403 where the soil turns hard and red. This is nearly 3.00m from the hard red soil of the other side of the cut. The base of the cut at the two ends of the cut 5436 (where the soil is hard and red) is flat and the break of the slope of the base is sharp. Thus, this wall 5403 appears to have at least three different cuts made in a single foundation trench: the unexcavated one, trench 5436 and trench 5402 which in fact only cuts a small area between 5446 and the western orthostate of wall 5403. It seems that as they were constructing the wall they were making adjustments as needed. | Period: | | Late Roman (5th -6th c AD) | Chronology: | | A.D. 582 | Grid: | | 277.08-271.62E, 1022.32-1022.85N | XMin: | | 271.62 | XMax: | | 277.08 | YMin: | | 1022.32 | YMax: | | 1022.85 | Site: | | Corinth | City: | | Ancient Corinth | Country: | | Greece | Masl: | | 84.94-85.39m. | References: | | Report: Nezi Field 2008 by Anne C.
