Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We reserved this pedestal of soil for separate excavation because it underlay the E portion of Wall 5478; a large boulder and several cobbles forming a W-facing face were several cm above the soil matrix when they were removed in that context. Because the surface of Wall 5478 and the soil matrix beneath it were pedestalled for some time, the structure itself has no kept associated finds and was lightly cleaned before removing this underlying soil matrix. However, there may still be some concern for contamination in this subfill layer.
There are still a few large stones, mostly to the W and N of the wall as it stands now, that remain buried in the matrix of soil that we are currently removing. They seem to indicate that at least part of the wall's construction predates the laying of the upper stones. G.S. has speculated that Context 5478 may be reflective of 18th century activity in this area, and that the top stones were moved from somewhere else. The orientation of the stones still set into the matrix of soil was much more E-W than N-S.
The excavation of this context revealed a darker substratum with more roof tiles and bone debris fill (context 5491). Later, we realized that 5491 and 5481 represented fill for a pit cut; 5481 represented the topmost layer of that fill.
