Description:   Structure materials: Limestone, roof tile. Material size: Limestone: 0.30x0.26x0.19; tile: 0.11x0.03. Material finish: mixed. Material construction: Random coursed. Material bonding: mud.
Notes:   This N-S running wall forms the eastern boundary of the Room bounded on the west by 5284 excavated in the 1960s. We are in this area in order to understand the space before we remove the martyr left by the 1960s excavation and the remaining bit of the late Frankish wall on the west side. This wall has three visible preserved courses of stone as seen from its eastern face. All of the limestone blocks along this face are hewn flat and there are two courses of tile, one course between each course of stone. The tile varies not only in size but also in color - some red-orange, some buff, and some pink. There are sometimes also tile placed vertically between stones, especially on the lowest visible course of stone. The south end of this wall is against the north end of wall 5435 but they do not bond. The south end of this wall does not bond with wall 5484.
C.K. Williams draws this wall (in plan Dwg 140-128c 1964) as an interior wall of a Frankish house bounded on the south by wall 5403, wall 5484 and wall 5216.
Notes added later: (20/5/08 CWP) As the martyr came down in the corner between 5483 and 5519 (dep. 5538 and 5544) the join of these two walls was revealed. While they are well joined with mud, they do not appear to be bonded; we looked at the course of tile and smaller stones under the big block in order to determine this. We are still uncertain which wall came first though. Also during the removal of the same martyr (5538 and 5534) more of the join between walls 5483 and 5484 was revealed. It is clearer now that they truly aren’t bonded.
Revised 20/5/08 ACF: 5483 abuts 5519 and does not bond.
Revised 4.6.08 ACF: On the east side of the wall, we excavated foundation trench cut 5792 and fill 5779. We have not yet found the foundation trench for wall 5403 but believe it is underneath the foundation trench 5779 for wall 5483, confirming our hypothosis that wall 5403 is earlier than wall 5483. Wall 5552 cuts the room bounded by walls 5403, 5483, and 5631 and is much later (at its preserved height, the fully preserved foundation part of wall 5552 is higher than the preserved height of all three aforementioned walls).
Revised 9.6.08 ACF: Foundation trench 5818 for wall 5403 was found below the level of the foundation trench for 5483. 5403 is definitely later older than 5483.
Revised (SL 16-05-09)
During excavations of thresholds 5647, 5670 and their foundations, walls 5519 and 5483 were found to bond.
