| Description: | Top slope of the context is moderate down to the E. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt. | |
| Notes: | We gave this area a light cleaning prior to further excavation because it has been regularly walked upon during the first 1.5 weeks of the field season. The aim was to take it down to the same level that was exposed after after excavating 5481, which contained substantial layers of sherds and tile. When the surface was cleaned, the surface primarily exposed was reddish in color, with cobbles and roof tiles included within. This appears to be a level of compacted debris or dumped fill rather than a used surface, since some of the tiles are projecting upward rather than lying flat upon the surface. Two other exposed layers appeared to overlap with this reddish layer: a lens of ash, elliptical in shape, and a hard white-colored layer with sharp edges underlying the area where Wall 5478 and subfloor 5487 were excavated. Upon further examination, it appears that the ash overlies part of the defined edge of where the white floor meets the reddish soil. As the apparantly topmost layer, it was our decision to try to excavate the ashy layer as our next action. | |
