Description: | The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | The brownish fill inside of the pithos was very hard and difficult to dig quickly. After many hours of digging, we exposed many courses of the pithos on the S side, reaching down approximately to the level of the bottom of the bothros fill 5496. However, this fill is very clean and has produced only a few scrappy pieces of pottery. Digging has become difficult the farther down we go, and exposure of the tile vaulting also makes the area a little unstable and dangerous. We have decided to stop and move to the deposits within the pithos cut again. At this point, the pithos is as follows: 1.20 m from the highest preserved course of tiles to the bottom (could be another m down!) 0.52 m back of exposed vaulting 1.53 is the diameter of the pithos, as currently excavated.
