Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the S. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   This context, which covers most of the soil exposed to the E of pit cut 5498, has been defined for some time as the fill cut by the N part of pit cut 5498. Contexts 5512 and 5500 overlie it, and it is worth exploring whether fill similar to fill 5513 is also present to the W of cut 5498, beneath the place where context 5503 lay. This level plays an important stratigraphic role, because it is cut by later pit 5498 and covers the cut of the well (Context # )
Excavation of 5513 revealed a number of different underlying soils, altough they may actually be continuations of overlying fills that were underdug, left to dry in the sun, and which were later re-visible once small top layers of 5513 were dug. Consequently, many of them have been associated with earlier contexts. The details of these layers are covered further in the description of context 5580.
