Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   We opened this context on a layer of dark, ashy fill that appears to rest on top of the reddish brown layer labeled 5513 (unexcavated as of 20.05.08). The fill included cobbles similar to those that were cleaned as part of context 5547, but their matrix was different from the soft, ashy consistency of the soil within 5558.
As we began defining the edges of the ashy layer, it becamse clear that it continued downward in the middle of the context, whereas its edges were tapered on top and formed a gradual slope with the edge of context 5513.
Following the ashy layer down in the center of the context, we notice flat lying tiles stacked to form curves-- the mouth of some kind of built structure. The surrounding ashy soil overlying the tiles is the same as the soil within the well.
It seems as though what we are dealing with right now is an imprint of a slumping event. This works with the soil that we excavated at the very beginning of this context, which was both dark and ashy and dark and red (i.e., mixed). One way that we might imagine this event is that the built tile and cemented structure was out of use and covered by a stone cover (of which we currently have 2/3 preserved, found inside of the structure); the covered structure was itself covered by fill. At some point, it seems that pressure may have caused the structure's lid to snap, causing the dirt resting on top of it to fall into the structure and cover over the lid. We have not yet found the other half of the lid, however, and are over 0.50 m down into the unit.
Below the lid, several large boulder (ca. 0.40 x 0.20 x 0.20 m avg.) were removed from the context as well, along with several mending sherds of blue glazed white ware. When we notice that the bottom of the structure was choked with large blocks, we decided to consider this the end of the topmost and latest filling event and switch baskets. The final stone was standing on end. When we removed the block, we saw that it had architectural sculpture on it- beed and reel, flowers, etc. Other observations: the construction of the pithos is cemented after the first ca. 0.28 m depth, and that continues past where we have stopped this basket.
