Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Kostas began by cleaning off the loose acculumation on the scarp of the bothroi to get a better sense of the depth of this pit. This pit fill was revealed with the excavation of 5588 and we are excavating it now with the intention of then removing the floor. This soil is a sandy silt, but the ash is such a major component of the soil matrix, it is more than an inclusion. Unfortunately, we did not think to do a preliminary test of the fill for seeds, etc. although this would have been helpful. The pit was shallow and semi-circular in shape, however, it may be semicircular because the rest of the pit was removed in excavating the bothroi as it is right on the south edge of the martyr created by the excavations of the bothroi in 1961.
