Corinth Basket: Nezi Field, context 5678
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Nezi Field, context 5678
Area:   Nezi Field
Context Type:   Wall
Title:   E-W partition wall
Category:   Cut
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5678
Page:   0
Date:   2010/04/07
Stratum:   Soil was loose and crumbly, poured in with the rubble to fill the foundation trench. The soil was probably moistened to act as a bonding agent.
Description:   The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is coarse sand. Structure materials: congolmerate stones, broken roof tiles, reused marble and architectural fragments. Material size: ca. 0.20 x 0.12; ca. 0.12 x 0.16-0.10. Material finish: roughly hewn; unworked. Material construction: random courses; dumped rubble. Material bonding: mud-plaster. Features: none.
Notes:   Excavated by Jess Paga in 2010.
E-W wall 5678 was first discovered and recorded in the 2008 excavation season by Thanos Webb. The wall was not drawn or excavated at that time. Subsequently, James Herbst drew the wall and it is included in the overall plan for the North of Nezi area. We began by checking the coordinates initially provided in 2008 (making minor adjustments), determining the dimensions, and photographing the wall (two photos).
The E-W partition wall, 5678, running up to the N-S wall, 5677 (not bonded), seems to be primarily the foundation rubble fill for the wall proper, which is not preserved. It is possible that the upper two courses of the wall base are preserved - there appears to be two irregular courses of roughly hewn conglomerate stones, below which is entirely dumbed rubble fill. The dumped rubble stones are slightly smaller than the roughly worked ones above (as indicated in the measurements - the rubble stones are listed second).
We began by removing the top two irregular courses in order to determine their relationship to the rubble fill. We found a coin, 2010-001, directly below one of the stones of the upper course, close to where wall 5678 abutts 5677. After removing the top two irregular courses, we took three elevation points to determine the upper level of the rubble fill (listed below), and one photo. We determined that the upper two irregular courses are the same as the rubble fill, and so proceeded to remove the rubble fill, using the same context number.
The rubble fill displays identical characteristics as the upper two irregular courses. The soil, used to bond the courses and dumped in with the foundation fill, is loose, coarse sand, with relatively homogenous inclusions of some small pebbles, some small fragments of charcoal, broken roof tiles, pottery, and bone. Mixed in with the small rubble stones are a few larger unworked stones, ca. 0.16-0.18 x ca. 0.10. There is a small margin of soil on the North and South faces of the rubble foundation fill (ca. 0.01-0.02 m.), indicating that the rubble fills the cutting for the wall foundation. Several pieces of worked marble have come out of the rubble fill: part of a mortar, the base and shaft of a columnette, a lekane fragment, and pieces of the marble tile floor (5710), associated with the North-South wall 5677. After removing the final stones of the rubble fill, the soil became more compact and reddish-brown in color, so we closed the context; the rubble wall and rubble foundations of 5678 are entirely removed.
Mid-excavation elevation points:
point 1 (middle of wall) = 84.56
point 2 (lowest section) = 84.47
point 3 (highest section) = 84.66
