Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Deposit 5699 is an ashy deposit that runs along the courtyard north of the drain and up to the wall at the south. The soil is quite soft and the ash appears to be quite deep (10 cm) in places. The 2L testing in water produced carbon flecks but no botanicals. Some areas seem more concentrated in ash, especially near the drain, and overall there are not many inclusions in the deposit. Sieving has revealed several small burnt twigs of charcoal and small pieces of mortar. The first pass revealed a cut which defines the extent of a bothros and the second pass is revealing more of it. The soil coming out is almost pure ash with flecks of white and black charcoal in it.
It was noted that the block identified as a stair for the later threshold (wall 5642) was set on more of the ashy fill, so this block was removed in order to reveal the extent of the pit.
