Stratum:   20% very poorly sorted inclusions of large to small pebbles (platy, subrounded and angular), pottery sherds, tile fragments and bone fragments in a dark yellowish chestnut brown soft sandy silt.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SE. Bottom slope of the context is slight down to the SEThe soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   After completing B55 on 27/04/07 we decided to remove the deposit of brown (chestnut) soil to the SW, B56. We are digging this deposit next because it overlies several other deposits while nothing overlies it or cuts it. Cleomenes continued removing B56 on 30/4/07 working from E to W.
As B56 approaches the eastern boundary of B54 (the cut of the robber's trench) its thickness decreases and Cleomenes uncovers tiles lying flat. Due to B56's rapid decrease in thickness Cleomenes has switched from using the big pick to the small pick and then to the trowel.
With the removal of B56 the topography of discrete deposits in the section of the excavation area N of the EW wall has increased, once again, in complexity (see bottom plan for B56). At this point in time we have decided to halt further excavation in the N section and concentrate excavation in the area S of the EW wall so that we can bring the S section of the excavation area down to a level comparable with the N. Excavation in the N area will recommence when both the N and S sections are at comparable levels.
