Stratum:   20%: tile, pottery, small angular pebbles, small angular cobbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   We made a distinction in the excavation of this second layer of fill because we notice a difference in the inclusions within the soil matrix; the large stones from before had become small pebbles, and appeared to go below the pit cut on the S edge of the pit cut, we decided to switch baskets and try to expose the fill with the pebbles elsewhere in the pit cut.
The bottom layer was exposed to the N edge of the bottom of the cut, and the rest of the pebbled soil appeared to undulate, with some angled cobbles projecting. Therefore, it does not appear to be a surface, although it does appear to be continuous.
We had not reached the limit of the Turkish wall's foundations when we finished this context. Also, the pickman did think that he detected soft soils to the N and E of the large corner of the Ottoman wall, perhaps indicating a foundation trench. This seems unlikely, however, since we ought to have detected that cut all the way from the beginning, if the wall is later than everything else in the area.
