Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating this context to see if it may be a robbing trench. We feel confident that a robbing trench was revealed by the removal of 5743 and we are hoping the eastern cut of 5743 continues south. The western cut of 5743 stops at wall 5678 but this western edge of the may reappear south of 5678. After a few centimeters were excavated, parallel cuts for the robbing trench were discovered. The northern limit of the robbing trench is cut by pit 5629 and the southern limit is wall 5562. The width of the trench south of wall 5678 is .95m. The width of the trench north of wall 5678 is .64m. This difference in width of the robbing trench north and south of the wall 5678 is not yet understood. In the southern part of the robbing trench, the eastern edge of the robbing trench follows the N-S orientation/border defined by the 2 block structure 5457.
The robbing trench revealed a few significant features that appear to date to the Roman period. In the southern part of the robbing trench two large blocks were discovered. One block lies at the base of the trench and the other even larger block and almost abuts wall 5562 (but is not built into wall) and runs into the eastern edge of the robbing trench. The block is placed on its end (.50m wide) and it other complete dimension is .77m. The portion of the block that is visible in the robbing trench but runs into the eastern edge of the robbing trench has a visible dimension of .61m . Thus only two of its dimensions are visible. Also, on the western edge of the robbing trench (1.58m north of wall 5678) we revealed what appears to be a cistern. Measuring from the top of the trench cut down, the wall of the cistern first appears .45m from the top of the eastern-facing cut. At the moment, we are unable to tell if the plaster/cement used to build the cistern is the waterproof type.
The bottom of the robbing trench is strewn with large cobbles and small boulders. It may be part of the foundation of the wall that was subsequently robbed out.
The excavation of 5777 is unfinished. Where wall 5678 extends into the robbing trench, the fill supporting this part of wall was left in place until the wall can be removed. This unexcavated area continues north where it is truncated by the later pit 5629.
