| Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt. | |
| Notes: | This fill was distinguished from the one preceding it because of the presence of tiles and cobbles, and by a difference in texture. The context revealed a surface with flat lying tiles underlying a flat boulder going into the section, marking an apparent terminus at the S end of the trench cut 5791; to the N, the context had a greater depth. The layer exposed appears to be a continuation of the tiled debris surface exposed to the W of Wall Spur 5473 (and robbing trench, since the wall once continued to the S). Since it appears to run beneath the later robbing trench cut, the E edge of the cut no longer exists. This will mark the end of the context. We have also defined the upper limits of the N-S wall upon cleaning at the end of this context. We noticed that the flat-lying tiles that the pickman had previously identified appear to be part of the wall's construction. They may yet relate to the exposed tile debris to the E. When we finished this context, we were able to see a clearer sequence of cuts based on the stratigraphy that has been excavated. Context 5837 confirmed that the cut for 5791 overlay the N edge of the cut for the E-W wall 5725 robbing event- but the S edge was always more readily clear. What we have interpreted that to mean is tha the S robbing event, which is dug deeper, appears to have predated both of the aforementioned cuts. This also explains the earlier appearance of the cut for the robbing of the E-W wall on its S limit than on its N limit. | |
