Title:   Rubbly Fill in Room west of wall 332
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1103
Context:   593
Page:   0
Date:   2009/06/01
Stratum:   90% fine-coarse pebbles, many cobbles and roof tile fragments, pottery and bone
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   After cleaning the north eastern part of the room bounded by walls 366, 332, 365 and 306, we again turn our attention to the area around the drain. Deposit context 593 is a rubbly layer of fill. It lies south of wall 336 and west of wall 332. To the east it abuts the north side of structure 346, which is either a well or storage pit at the center of the room. To the west, the fill ran up to the covered drain 426, abutting the edge. The removal of deposit 593 revealed a lens of dark brownish black fill with significantly fewer inclusions.
We investigated the north side of structure 346 (well/ storage structure) and we did not find a cut for the structure. This suggests that 593 was fill abutting and laid against the stones of structure 346. We speculate that the cut for structure 346 is underneath the paving stones associated with that structure.
Deposit 593 extended on both the east and west sides of drain 426. The removal of 593 exposed the bottom of the drain covers.
We recovered a blue glass bead with white piping.
Removing fill 593 has revealed the bottoms of the cover slabs of drain 426. These slabs sit on top of roof tile fragments or small blocks. There is one large block on which the slabs sit.
