| Notes: | This context is a continuation of the cobbles and tiles under context 5967 that we interpret as a foundation for an E pier or arch on the E of Threshold 5919. The soil is reddish brown, and the cobbles are medium subrounded, unlike the larger angular cobbles in W pier foundation 5976. When we got to the bottom of this level we hit harder redder soil with no large cobbles, which indicates the bottom of the pier foundation. The cobbles in the E scarp of this trench that continued under wall 10085 and directly abutted the cobbles of this foundation stop about 10 cm above the base of this level, and so are probably associated with wall 10085 and not this feature. | |
