Stratum:   90% (tile, bone, spherical cobbles and boulders, tabular cobbles, sub-rounded fine-coarse pebbles)
Description:   The soil color is dark brownish grey. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating the baulks left as martyrs to the N and S of foundation 5552 by he 1960s excavation. We are attempting to establish the chronology of the walls in the area. We have established a stratigraphic connection between the two baulks and because T. Webb wants to sample the entire area we have merged the N and S baulk temporarily into a single context so that we can increase the sample size, even though they are cut by later action. The N baulk is now gone and the soil to the N of foundation 5552 represents a single level as left by the 1960s excavation. Removal of floor 6131 revealed another layer of soil (6131) resembling a leveling fill and showing a high degree of burning.
