Description:   The soil color is light reddish brown. It is silty sand. Structure materials: field stone/cobbles. Material size: .2-.4 m stones. Material finish: rough. Material construction: random uncoursed. Material bonding: soil.
Notes:   We are excavating foundation 6187. At this point we think we understand the sequence of events, how all of the structures and structural elements in this area relate to one another.
There are two walls, constructed of large cut blocks, that are earlier than all the other structures and form a corner (6120 was revealed under 5552 and 6190 was revealed under 6166). These walls are either contemporary with or post date the doorway that gives access between this room and the room to the east. Wall 6190 went out of use and was partially robbed (robbing trench 6166). Wall 6120 is also partially robbed. A wall foundation was built over the robbing trench fill for wall 5552 (foundations 6171, 6172, 6181, 5965).
Wall 5552 and its superstructure (5922) was built over both the foundations mentioned above and the remains of wall 6120. Wall 6190 was later disturbed at its S end by the construction of a deep foundation for a possible pier or arch (6117). That pier was out of use by the time a much later threshold was constructed atop the foundation and wall 6172. This threshold seems to have been the latest structural element in the area (for info on this threshold see notes for 5553).
(05/01/09: These foundations rest atop foundation trench fill 6169, which fills cut 6227, which truncates north-south wall 6027 and east-west wall 5631.)
