Description:   The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We moved to excavate in this area after revealing layers of softer levelling fill, ostensibly resting on top of more of the surface discovered in the excavation of contexts 6213 and 6211. 6220 rested directly above this context.
What we discovered when we removed 6222 were two distinct soils: 1) more of the white clay floor that had been noticed in the profile, and which matched both the surface and the profile of the context revealed by the excavation of 6164 and 2) packed surfaces of darker, softer soil near the walls, which appear to be the result of disturbance. The level that we have exposed has pockets of ash that also appear in the surface revealed by the excavation of 6164 to the south; Panos feels confident that we are looking at two parts of the same exposed surface.
Another note: while the disturbance near wall section 5648 was small and more regular, to the south of section 5631 [i.e., further east], the disturbance was deeper and broader- probably also because there were three large stones removed as part of this context, which also perhaps disturbed the floor surface and led to it being depressed there.
After revealing and photographing the entirety of this floor surface, we plan to move on to removing the much-later addition of the thresholds in the northwestern corner of our area, beginning with threshold 5647.
