Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 6275 is a fill cut into floor patches south of staircase in southern part of courtyard of Byzantine house. Characterized by softer soil than other deposits around it and necessary to remove it at this point. Soil is dark reddish brown clayey silt with ca. 30% inclusions (ceramics, stone). May represent some type of dumped fill laid up against staircase at some point. Another interpretation is that this represents the foundation trench for the staircase particularly since fill goes down to bottom of lowest stone of the staircase. Its associated cut is 6272.
One troubling aspect of removal of context 6275 is that this foundation trench only appears on the southern side of the staircase and may still be masked on the west side by higher layers. If this is the case, we may have taken this context too early. Staircase is labeled as structure (6296).
At eastern part of context 6275 a small patch left unfinished because the tools could no longer get in there to dig it.
Later notes (7/5/9): After excavation on the north side of the staircase it became clear that wall 5783 predates the staircase, and that the staircase had no foundation trench. Thus, this deposit has been reinterpreted to be a cut used to level the floor, sloping upwards to the south, in order to provide a level surface for the erection of the staircase.
