Stratum:   Small clay pellets, small stones, small tile fragments, bones. Fifteen percent inclusions.
Description:   The soil color is light greyish white. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   After completing the excavation of the large fill in the eastern part of our section, we decided, with the good advice of our trusty pickmen companions, Panos and Tasos Kakouros, to approach this area. This seemed like a relatively reasonable place to begin since it was relatively small and had defined boundaries, sitting atop the much larger layer that would later become 655. As such we approached it, pick in hand.
It was a whitish gray deposit with clay pellets, small stones, and other inclusions, especially noteworthy for the large amount of clay. While it does not seem terribly related to other areas, it was cut by wall 420, putting paid to initial speculation that it was runover, so to speak, from the south side of the wall. Given the later absence of structures connected to wall 420 on either side of the wall, it is perhaps futile to attempt to find an "inside" or "outside"space, further damaging the initial interpretation of this clay as run-off flooring clay. Aside from a high amount of clay in this layer, it is difficult to speak definitively on its creation.
25 May 2012: Note: this seems to have been the first context excavated in this area since 2008. As a point of interest, the eastern border of this clay area coincides with the eastern edge of stub wall 731. [deleted]. - RM
