Stratum:   sandy silt with ash, tiles, bones, burnt bones, sea shells, pottery, iron, carbon, course and fine pebbles, boulders, bronze, coin, fragments of white plaster
Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We decided to dig a section to explore the relationship between 12th century white clay (context 638) and ashy pit. To the east more stones and tile appear. We stopped digging on the west side because the red clay appeared and the northern boundary on the west side for the same reason. During sieving (100%) we found Coin #12 (very approximately, 86.88 EL; E 262.84, N 1007.62). During sieving a lot of bones, some burnt, and seashells appeared. Other organic material included carbon and what was thought by Christos to be egg shells, but may just be fine bone fragments and shells. Other finds included nails, bronze, a mosaic tessera, fragments of painted wall, large quanities of iron, plaster, and glass. After 60 buckets the soil to the south bordering wall 366 had fewer inclusions (down ~40 % from ~70% before. 80 buckets and 4 soil samples by end of day (4 April 2012).
Date 5 April 2012: To continue excavation of 642 along wall 540 we removed structure 653. For this section of the pit see 657.
We finished this context when the shape of the ashy pit became more well defined, bordered by red clay to E.
During carbon sorting we found some large pieces of wood, 1-2 cm. In museum among glass fragments we found a thumb indented cup, base 1, and a body sherd of clear colorless glass with applied decoration in greenish tinge.
Total bucket count: 114. 6 total soil samples
