Notes:   N.B. Context number 6489 was skipped in 2009. For consistency it is being used during the 2010 season.
Context 6489 is located in the southeast quadrant of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. The northern part of the context was revealed by the removal of context 6679. Analogous to context 6482, context 6589 may represent a small leveling fill laid down for floor 6668-6670=6672. Leveling fill 6679 would have been the primary fill for this floor, but it is likely that there were also several small fills laid down before this.
The removal of context 6489 revealed more of a cut at its northern boundary which had become visible during the removal of context 5943. This cut may be for a robbing trench and is also visible in the western scarp of 5943.
Most of the pottery coming out of context 6489 appears to be Roman or earlier in date which helps corroborate the interpretation of the context as a leveling fill.
The soil is soft, dark yellowish brown clayey silt with 10% very poorly sorted inclusions (stone, tile, roots, bone, pottery).
The removal of context 6489 also revealed more of the lower foundations of wall 6228 which appears to consist of rubble in contrast to the square, ashlar blocks of the upper courses. Against these foundations, a soil layer was also revealed abutting wall 6228 (this soil layer now labeled context 6490).
