Description:   The soil color is dark brownish yellow. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   N.B. Context number 6490 was not used in 2009. For consistency, we are using it during the 2010 season.
Context 6490 is located against the north side of wall 6228 in the southern part of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It may represent a tile and stone fill (maybe a leveling fill) in this room. It was revealed during the removal of context 6489. This context (6490) is distinct for having very large inclusions and frequent pieces of charcoal. It sits directly against the rubble foundations of wall 6228 although this wall may be later and would have truncated this layer.
The soil is dark brownish yellow clayey silt with 20% inclusions: tile, bone, pottery, roots, stones (including boulders).
On the eastern side of context 6490 it is bound by wall 6375 and on the west by the corner of the Ottoman house.
As digging continued, it became apparent that context 6490 continued under wall 6228, We left a martyr in the far western part of the context to maintain the stability of the wall. The layers below context 6490 also run under wall 6228 and wall 6375 indicating we have excavated as much as we can in this part of the room.
