Stratum:   20% inclusions: stone (medium pebbles to boulders, angular, tabular to spherical), tile, pottery, bone, roots
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 6679 is located in the middle section of the room west of the courtyard. It sits between two pits (6232 to north; 6658 to south). It is bound on the west by foundation trench 6666 and on the east by wall 6375.
The context appears to be a fill - likely a leveling fill - for context 6668=6670=6672, a floor surface which lay directly above this context. Fill 6679 appears to be relatively deep and may lie on a surface which predates the Byzantine house. If so, this would associate it with the earliest construction phase of the house. Fill 6679 is almost level with only a slight slope to the east. It also appears that the eastern foundation trench of wall 5724 cut into this fill suggesting that the wall is later in date.
The soil consists of 20% inclusions (stone, tile, pottery, bone, roots) which is very poorly sorted. Some of the stones are boulders. All of the stones are angular and tabular-spherical. The soil is dark yellowish brown clayey silt.
In the northeast corner of context 6679 a patch of ash and charcoal was revealed. A few medium-sized bone fragments came out of this context.
The removal of context 6679 revealed a sloping, compact surface with few visible inclusions. The soil of this revealed layer also appears redder. There is also a revealed layer above this in the northwest corner.
Most of the pottery coming out of this fill appears to be Roman in date helping corroborate the interpretation of context 6679 as a fill. Along with pottery and bone, a few pieces of glass turned up. Removal of this context also revealed a cut apparently associated with a pit. The pit (now labeled context 5943 with cut 6326) is at the southernmost part of the context abutting the northeast corner of the Ottoman house. The final total could be as many as four revealed contexts overlaying one another to some extent.
Pit 5943 now known to be a continuation of a pit dug in the 1960s and is much later in date than any of the associated layers (such as 6679).
