Notes:   NOTES FOR CONTEXTS 6726, 6728, AND 6731
The three pits 6727. 6728, and 6731 (and associated cuts 6727, 6729, and 6732) were discovered while cleaning the clay surface 6733. Each pit was investigated individually and it was determined that they all contained the same soil and material: a loose, silty or coarse sand soil, with lots of inclusions of tile, pottery, and some small lenses of charcoal. While investigating these pits, it was also determined that the material within them extended below the clay surface. After we excavated the clay surface (= 6733), we saw that the "pits" were not actually pits, but part of a unified stratum of loose soil that ran underneath all of the clay surface. All of the "pits" appeared to have cut the clay surface, so we have two hypotheses:
1.) the clay surface was not laid over the entire area bounded by walls 5394, 5431, and 5562
2.) the clay surface was laid over the entire area originally, but was later disturbed by tree/plant roots and/or inscect and animal activity
