Stratum:   10-15% inclusions: metal, bone, roots, pottery, tile, stones (medium-coarse pebbles; angular-subrounded; tabular)
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the N. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   Context 6808 is a lower level of fill in the robbing trench defined by cut 6762 in the eastern end of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. We realized that we had to dig context 6808 during the excavation of context 6806, a fill in this room truncated by cut 6762. We stopped digging 6806 and commenced with 6808. It is sharply distinguished from fill 6761 above in this robbing trench due to a relative lack of inclusions. The soil is dark reddish brown silty clay with 10-15% inclusions (stone, pottery, tile, metal, bone, roots).
At the southern end of context 6808 during its excavation against the eastern-most revealed block of structure 6738 we noted that this block sat atop another ashlar block of different material. This lower block is the same material as a block currently abutting the north face of structure 6738 and the southwest edge of cut 6762. These blocks could be from the wall/feature robbed out by this robbing trench.
Context 6808 also turned out to be quite deep. Digging also revealed an additional block beneath the one abutting structure 6738. We reached bottom in this trench when we hit a layer of hard red soil similar to that at the bottom of pit 5943. If it is the same sterile soil this means that north of the curb the sterile soil was cut down or terraced quite extensively compared to south of the cub. We also left a small martyr at the northern end of trench in line with the martyr beneath wall 5725. A sample was taken to compare with the one taken from context 6761.
