Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   This context was revealed by the excavation of 6863. We initially thought that this layer dived underneath the rocky dark, reddish brown layer to the north, so started excavating that layer first. When we noticed a rockless area appear above part of the edge of the rocky layer, as a precaution, we started excavating this rockless layer, 6870, instead, as the later layer. On further examination, we realised 6870 was a pit, and so returned to excavate it before this rockless layer, 6870. This layer continued under the pit, and all the way along the bank bounded by the various pits and foundation trenches dug round it. It revealed a lighter red layer underneath, causing us to close this layer.
Two bottom elevations taken: 83.94, 84.02
NB With hindsight, it seems likely we missed cut 6903 in excavating the SE corner of 6875, - unless 6665 only cut 6904, not 6875 also (JZT)
